Jackson County legislator Sean Smith hosts workshop for senior property tax credit program

JACKSON COUNTY, Mo. —Jackson County Legislator Sean Smith organized a workshop in Lee's Summit to help senior citizens apply for a property tax credit.

The program enables those eligible for social security retirement to receive a credit that freezes their property taxes on their homes.

Over 54,000 property owners in Jackson County filed appeals to their assessments in 2023, and seniors were among the hardest hit.

"So when we suddenly see their property tax increase, which causes the cost of them living in the home they've always lived in to go way up, that's a tremendous psychologist and financial burden they cannot bare," Smith said.

While the Missouri Legislature approved Senate Bill 190 in 2023, it requires counties to adopt their tax freeze program.

If you missed the workshop and would like to see if you're eligible, you can visit the Jackson County Government's website.
